Can you pass a Virginia assisted living background check?
Direct care staff in Virginia must clear a criminal background screening with no barrier crimes. Your tuition includes this check, which we run after enrollment.

01 Do I need to be a CNA before taking this class? +
No. Virginia requires a qualifying direct-care training pathway before you can register for the state Medication Aide exam, and CNA certification is just one of several that count:
- Virginia CNA certification
- An approved nurse aide education program
- A nursing education program preparing for RN or LPN licensure
- Current nursing student status with at least one clinical course involving 40 hours of direct client care
- A DMAS-approved personal care aide program
- An approved geriatric assistant or home health aide program
- A DSS-approved 40-hour direct care staff training program provided by an RN or LPN
None of this affects whether you can take the class. It's what you'll need when you register for the state exam after completing the program.
02 What happens after I apply? +
If you're eligible, you'll go straight to tuition payment. Your $925 covers the full program, all materials, and your background check. After payment you'll pick your cohort (day or evening), your background check gets started, and your welcome packet arrives by email.
03 What if I'm not sure I can pass the background check? +
Choose "I'm not sure" on the question above. You'll get a short follow-up form, and our enrollment team will review your situation privately and give you an honest read before you pay anything. Virginia's barrier-crime rules are specific, and some things that worry people don't disqualify them at all.
04 I'm under 18. Can I still enroll? +
If you hold an active Virginia CNA, yes. You can complete the training now and take the state exam once you turn 18. If you don't have a CNA yet, we'll point you to the right first step. Answer the age question above and we'll route you to the details.
