What changed in South Carolina in 2026
South Carolina now has a statewide certification for unlicensed staff who administer medications in skilled nursing facilities. The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) launched the Medication Assistant Training Program (MATP) under S.C. Code § 40-33-43 and began accepting applications from training organizations on January 1, 2026.
Before this, medication technicians in South Carolina were trained facility by facility, with no state exam or registry for nursing home staff. The new pathway creates a portable credential: a Certified Medication Assistant who is listed on a state registry and can work at any licensed skilled nursing facility in the state.
How to become a Certified Medication Assistant in South Carolina
According to SCDHHS, candidates must complete these steps:
- Complete a state-approved Medication Assistant Training Program of at least 100 hours: a minimum of 60 hours of classroom instruction, including skills lab or simulation work, and a minimum of 40 hours of supervised clinical practicum in a licensed nursing home under an approved registered nurse.
- Pass a skills competency evaluation after finishing the training program.
- Pass the Medication Aide Certification Exam (MACE), the national exam administered by Pearson VUE on behalf of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
- Be listed on the South Carolina Medication Assistant Registry, which qualifies you to work as a medication assistant in a licensed skilled nursing facility.

Note that the MATP credential is for licensed skilled nursing facilities. Assisted living and community residential care facilities in South Carolina follow separate medication training rules. Our program is being designed around the same model that works for our Virginia students: live online classroom sessions taught by registered nurses, day or evening cohort options so you can keep working, and in-person clinical hours at a partner skilled nursing facility.

- Format: live online classroom plus supervised clinical practicum at a licensed South Carolina nursing home
- Exam preparation: MACE-aligned practice built into every unit, the same approach our Virginia program uses
- One all-inclusive fee: tuition, materials, clinical coordination, and background check, announced when enrollment opens
