Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between a medication aide, a med tech, and a medication assistant?
They describe the same kind of role, an unlicensed caregiver trained and certified to administer medications under nurse supervision, but each state uses its own title and rules. Virginia says Registered Medication Aide, New Jersey says Certified Medication Aide, and South Carolina’s new nursing home credential is Certified Medication Assistant. Employers often say “med tech” for all of them.
Does a certification from one state work in another?
Generally no. Each state approves its own training programs and runs its own registry. If you move, check the new state’s rules before you rely on your existing credential.
Do I need to be a CNA first?
Virginia accepts CNA, PCA, or direct care credentials. New Jersey requires an active NJ CNA, CHHA, or PCA certification. South Carolina’s prerequisites are set by SCDHHS. See each state page for details.
